Bin Collection

We, the undersigned, petition the council to Collect general and recycling bins weekly rather than fortnightly. Provided with garden waste bins at no extra charge.

There is an increase in council tax but a reduction in the quality of service for bin collecting. General waste and recycling bins are collected less frequently from weekly to fortnightly. Our concerns are that particularly in the spring and summer months, this potential creates health and safety concerns, e,g, soiled nappies, raw meat fermenting in bins for two weeks and consider this to be disgraceful. We suggest that bins should be collected weekly and garden waste bins provided to every household for no extra charge.

Council response

Dear Sasha Ramsey,

We understand that some residents will have concerns about the changes, however, the decision to move to fortnightly general waste collections has not been taken lightly, and we are one of the last council’s in England to introduce fortnightly collections. The service has to change because the City Council must make significant budget cuts. This is because of a reduction in government funding and means we can no longer keep services as they are.

We want to reassure you that we have tried to make the change as easy as possible, and to give residents a choice about the size of bin they use to meet their household needs.

Although the current free garden waste collection service is ending when your fortnightly bin collections begin, we have ensured that options are available to you when disposing of your garden waste. We have special offers on garden composters available through our online provider (http://www.getcomposting.com) and the local tips will accept your garden waste for free.

You can also choose the optional paid-for service which started in February costing £35 a year which includes a new purple bin. Concessions are available to those on maximum council tax support reducing the payment to £17.50. To sign up for this service go to http://www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/recycling. We encourage residents to look at the all the options available to them and decide what is best suited to their needs.

We also understand it’s going to take time to get used to the new system, and we appreciate your co-operation.

Over the next few years, we will continue our engagement and education programmes and expect to reduce the amount of general waste across the city and increase the amount we recycle in line with the government’s recycling target of 50% of all waste by 2020.

We hope this email makes the council’s position clear and that you understand the reasons and need behind the changes.

Regards
