Purpose of the consultation
The City of Wolverhampton Council is proposing to permanently close Craddock Street subway which is located near to the Avion Shopping Centre in Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton.
The subway has been recommended for closure by local councillors, residents, West Midlands Police and the Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour team as there have been incidents of anti-social behaviour within it and reports that it is a unpleasant and intimidating place.
Pedestrian surveys conducted in the subway and on the traffic signal crossing identified low usage of the subway but significant use of the signal crossing. Reasons for the low usage have been linked to the unappealing walk through and anti-social behaviour.
The Council has listened to residents and businesses in the area and has drafted plans to close the subway permanently by infilling it and landscaping surrounding the area.
The objectives of the closure are to:
· Removal of the source of the crime in the area as identified by West Midlands Police.
· Address ongoing problems of flooding, vandalism, graffiti and maintenance of the subway.
· Creation of new public open space on both sides of the subway.
As part of local action to improve the experiences of residents and business in the area, a community day event is taking place in and around the Avion Centre on Saturday 26th January 2019. There will be activities happening throughout the morning at the Whitmore Reans Library and St. Andrew’s Church Hall near the Avion Centre.
